Martin Allen
Allen commenced his playing career with QPR, spending six seasons at the club before moving to West Ham for £670,000. He helped the Hammers gain promotion in 1991 and 1993. Allen’s tenure at the West Ham lasted until 1995, when he was transferred to Portsmouth for £500,000. He went on to spend three seasons there and soon became a favourite with the Fratton Park faithful. He ended his playing career at Southend. He is now a successful football league manager.
John Aloisi
Aloisi started his career playing his football in Belgium for Royal Antwerp and Standard liege. At the start of the 1996-97 campaign, Aloisi signed for Portsmouth FC and he made an immediate impact at the club, he was the clubs top goal scorer by the end of the 96-97 term and his prolific rate in front of goal earned him a move to premiership club, Coventry City, for £600,000 in December 1998. He scored a total of 30 goals in 68 games for Portsmouth, an impressive goal scoring rate for any player. Aloisi went on to spend three seasons at Coventry and was well known for scoring vital goals, most notably scoring two goals in Coventry’s 4-1 away victory over Aston Villa.
Lee Bradbury
Bradbury began his playing career for Portsmouth at the age of 20, having been recruited by the army. He made his debut during the 1993-94 season, spending three seasons at the club. He was outstanding for pompey through out the 1996-97 campaign, which in turn triggered off huge interest by major clubs. Manchester City manager, Frank Clark bought the player for £3 million in the summer of 1997. His spell at City was not successful as they were relegated by the end of his first year at the club. He soon moved on to Crystal Palace, a club which he spent another season at, before moving back to Portsmouth, spending three and a half more years at the club, notching up over 100 appearances. He went on to play for Walsall, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday and then
Southend United.
Aaron Flahavan
Flahavan joined the club as goal keeper in the year 1992. He was installed first choice goal keeper in 1996 and made a huge impact at the club. During his nine year spell, playing for the club, he made over 115 appearances in goal. In August 2001, he sadly died in a car accident near Bournemouth. He was one of Portsmouth’s greatest ever goalkeepers.
Predrag Radosavljevic
After enjoying a successful spell playing for Red Star Belgrade, he moved to England to play for Everton and then Portsmouth. He spent one season at Pompey between 1994 and 1995. He instantly became a fans favourite and notched up 40 appearances, scoring five goals for the club. He later on moved to America to play football for various American domestic clubs.
John Beresford
Beresford commenced his career playing for Barnsley between 1986 and 1989 and then went on to move to Portsmouth in the summer of 1989, he soon became a permanent fixture in the Portsmouth starting line up, however ankle and ligament injuries hampered his progress at Portsmouth. He was an England Under 21 international who could play as a full back or in midfield. |
