After the huge success of the late 1940’s, Pompey slowly and gradually disintegrated. The 1950-51 campaign did not run as smoothly as the previous season, despite still managing to reach 7th place. A significant improvement was witnessed the following seasons as Peter Harris was once again prolific in front of goal and he helped Pompey finish the season off in forth position, they embarked on a decent FA Cup run, reaching the last eight. The 52-53 season was forgettable as they only managed to finish off in a poor 15th place. The 1953-54 campaign was a sound success, they were a formidable force in the league, in the title race for the majority of the season, however they finished off the campaign in third position. Portsmouth painfully fell after that, the following four seasons saw Pompey struggle into the second division, they were eventually relegated  by the termination of the 1958-59 season. Many of the supporters who were used to success now turned away from the club. They were also poor in the FA Cup, failing to reach past the fifth round during those miserable years.
