Freddie Cox
Cox played his football for Arsenal and West Brom, before going into management. In the summer of 1956, he was installed manager of third division club, Bournemouth and his spell was successful, it included a giant killing of Tottenahm in the 1956 FA Cup. His success at the club earned him a move to Portsmouth in the summer of 1958. He was unlucky at Portsmouth as many of their players had been dogged by injuries during his spell in charge. He spent three years at the club, leaving in 1961. He later on moved to Gillingham to manage the club.

 

Ian St John
As a player, St John played for Liverpool, Coventry and Tranmere. In the summer of 1974 he was installed as manager of Portsmouth, his three seasons in charge were not so successful. He managed the side during the era which they got relegated and during his time they nearly were demoted to the forth division. He soon went on to manage Motherwell of Scotland, before becoming a football pundit, most notably having the show, ‘Saint and Greavsie.’

Frank Burrows
Burrows played his football for Raith rovers, Scunthorpe United and Swindon Town. He was named manager of Swindon at the start of the 73-74 season however he only remained in charge at the club for three years. He wa then installed assistant manager of Portsmouth in 1976. Once Jimmy Dickinson left the managerial post, he was installed the manager in 1979 and enjoyed success at the club. Burrows helped lift Pompey out of the forth division towards the top of the third. He later on had a spell managing Cardiff City before managing Portsmouth in 1990 for one more season.

Terry Fenwick
Fenwick played his football for Crystal Palace and Spurs. He also reperesented England during the 1986 world cup finals. He ended his playing career with Swindon before moving into management. In 1995, he was installed as the manager of Portsmouth, replacing Jim Smith. After three years in the job, he was released by the club in 1998. He then went on to manage Northampton for a short period of time and is now enjoying doing coaching in Trinidad.

 

Alan Ball
After a playing career which saw him being part of an England team that won a world cup, Ball went into management with Portsmouth in the year 1984. He lifted the club off the bottom end of the second division and into the top flight of English football in 1987, after one year in the first division they were demoted immediately. Ball later on went on to manage Exeter City, Southampton and Manchester city before having a second spell in charge at Portsmouth.
