Bolton 2-0 Portsmouth

The Cup fighters, Bolton Wanderers FC did things by three’s during the 1920’s, they won the first ever FA Cup staged at Wembley in 1923, they won the cup again in 1926 and 1929. Bolton fielded a strong team for the 1929 final against Portsmouth, a side that included, Seddon, Butler, Nuttall, Pym and Haworth. In what proved to be a thrilling match, Bolton ran out of the match as 2-0 winners, and prior receiving their winner’s medal, they were greeted by Edward the Prince of Wales.

Portsmouth 4-1 Wolves

The favourites to win the cup, Wolverhampton Wanderers found that being everyone’s favourites counted for nothing in the FA Cup final of 1939 after they faced Portsmouth. Portsmouth came in to the match fairly low in the table and was predicted to be a walk over for Wolves. However, the pressure got to the young Wolverhampton players and Pompey were outstanding on the day, hammering Wolves 4-1. The Portsmouth manager, Jack Tinn was colourful after the match. Tinn had brought a celebrity friend of his in to the dressing room prior the start of the final to keep his players confident and relaxed.

Manchester City 2-1 Portsmouth

In an encounter that finally saw Manchester City win the FA Cup, their 19 year old keeper, Frank Swift, fainted when his team lifted the FA Cup trophy. The match between Manchester City and Portsmouth in the FA Cup final on 28th April 1934 proved to be a thriller.
In the first half, Frank Swift was disappointed as he allowed a cross to skid off his wet hands and into the back of the goal. However the City forward, Fred Tilson promised him that he would get on the score sheet on 2 occasions in the second half to make up for it. Tilson was as good as his word; however nerves had so affected Frank that he collapsed over in a faint at the final whistle. Frank Wift, twelve years later on, made his full international debut for England.

Portsmouth 3-1 Reading

Portsmouth enjoyed a fine start to the season before this match and were sitting in the top five of the premiership. Everything came good for Pompey during this match as they finished it off with a convincing 3-1 win in a match they dominated. Kanu got on the score sheet twice as Portsmouth went in to a 2-0 lead and he could have scored a hat trick. Mendez scored Portsmouth’s third and Pompey were cruising. Reading scored a consolation goal with several minutes remaining through Kevin Doyle and the score line ended 3-1 to Portsmouth as they went in to the top four of the premiership table.
